Unfortunately, the world population grows by 80 million a year, so a million people dying delays the issue by less than 5 days.

Greenhouse gas emissions were reduced considerably during COVID - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-020-0797-x - but jumped back when everything opened up.

From that article it's possible that emissions for 2020 might be down as much as 7%. In the unlikely event that that was permanent, that would delay things by less than 7 years.

We need to decrease our greenhouse gas outputs by 90% in order to avoid heating.

There's only one solution - people and governments and corporations need to stop their excessive consumption. The world overall needs to degrowth itself. Developing countries aren't the issue today, with the poorest half of the world responsible for only 10% of emissions, but they need to be guided towards a more prosperous but sustainable future.
