While I agree with the rest of your comment, and clapped, Rowling is a terrible writer. Yes, I did read all the Harry Potter books, but by the end, it was a real slog, I remember nothing from the last two books, and her repetitive, heavy-handed text and complete lack of any non-cartoon characterizations made a re-read impossible. (And I was on record claiming this long before she came out as a full-time whiner.)

King, on the other hand, can create really deep and human characters. In particular, the movie of "The Shining" replaces Jack Torrance's difficult but very sympathetic character with a shambling monster, so you aren't the least bit surprised when he goes off the rails.
