We are not yet in the Collapse; we are in the Crumble. Probably historians will mark 2001 as its beginning.

There will be catastrophes and disasters, but localized ones, because there is still some slack left in our system so that the whole thing will more or less keep on working.

Of course, at some point that will run out. The system will break apart and never come back together in its current form. This took centuries for the Romans. It certainly won't take centuries for us, but it will take a couple more decades. Probably.
