Yes, if this were true that would mean that at least two of the ready-mades, En prévision du bras cassé (“In anticipation of a broken arm”, the snow shovel) and Fountain, the urinal, were in fact created by Duchamp!
Duchamp definitely misled people on other occasions. He claimed repeatedly that he had quit making art for ever and was a full-time chess player, and in fact he played for France in the 1931 Chess Olympiad in Poland. But all the time he was working on his last, great work, Etant Donnés.
I really hope it’s true. It would be the one of the greatest pranks ever pulled. Something so clever as that is too clever to be called a mere lie.
