The Milky Way Galaxy is about 100,000 light years across, so we'd need to be very roughly 50,000 light years away to get a clear picture.
Voyager 1 is the farthest human device from us, and it isn't even a light day away. It would have to be very roughly 20 million times further away to see the full picture.
(And it isn't actually going out of the galaxy anyway, it's going to Ophiuchus.)
