We've had various virtual realities for twenty years now. Second Life does pretty well everything that Meta is supposed to do in the future, and it hasn't taken off.

There are billions of Internet users in the developing world. They can get onto the Internet with a $20 knockoff smartphone. A VR headset will always cost a lot more than a cellphone because it has everything a cellphone has, and a lot more.
Facebook simply thinks they can push crap on us because they are Facebook. But people are too lazy, too cheap and too superficial - all in a good way, this time - to want to cooperate. It will be interesting to see what happens.
