Your argument appears to be completely dealt with in the original article.

As the article points out, even if every single roof in America were covered with solar panels, it wouldn't even cover 10% of America's usage - and of course, a majority of roofs aren't suitable for solar power.

So no, it won't solve a significant slice of the problem.

And, as the article points out, it would a desperately inefficient way to deploy all that solar power. If the money you personally had invested in solar had been spent on industrial scale solar power, we would have gotten over twice the energy out of it.

It strikes me you stopped reading at the sentence you quoted, which is to say, you didn't read the article at all.
