Your point is very good.

If I recall, original and Advanced D&D had alignment as an integral part of the rules.

The crew I was with took it fairly seriously - your alignment could be randomly generated and its true value was kept secret.

I liked that, because it gave you license to be much different than you would be in real-life, with eight basic guides for "life".
